The National Down Syndrome Society has been working to advocate for disabled individuals since its creation in 1979, working to create a world, “where individuals with Down syndrome thrive” [1]. They are involved in a wide variety of activities that contribute to the Down syndrome community. The society fights for individuals with Down syndrome through pushes for governmental advocacy and by getting citizens involved in their mission. The organization works to, “[empower] individuals with Down syndrome and their families by driving policy change, providing resources, engaging with local communities and shifting public perceptions” [1]. Implementing their, “four key pillars: Resources & Support, Research, Advocacy & Policy, and Community Engagement” leads them to reach their goal to help those with Down syndrome in any way that they can.
Advocacy is a very large part of what NDSS does to better the lives of disabled individuals. They fight for the rights of those with Down syndrome that have been overlooked by policies and by society in many ways. The National Down Syndrome Society advocates for disabled individuals through the, “federal, state, and local policies and regulations that positively impact people with Down syndrome across the country and affirm their human rights” [1]. This organization connects with people in power to make sure disabled individuals are treated well in the world. The advocacy that is created for those with disabilities through this organization’s, “legislative agenda spans the life of individuals with Down syndrome from birth to adulthood [because of,] healthcare, education, employment, and economic self-suffciency” [1]. Dedication to their mission drives the National Down Syndrome Society to create and fight for better conditions and opportunities for those with disabilities.
The NDSS has had a significant impact on numerous individuals with Down syndrome. Many have been able to live better lives because of the work that the National Down Syndrome Society has done. The organization “ plays a critical role in ensuring that individuals with Down syndrome have the same opportunities as everyone else to lead fulfilling lives. [They] serve as a trusted national voice, a policy leader, and a connector for families and communities. [Their] work helps break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create a more inclusive world for all people with Down syndrome” [1]. Without NDSS many disabled individuals would live with limitations, not having the support that the organization provides. The National Down Syndrome Society passionately advocates for disabled individuals' “education, employment, health [and] wellness” [1], through their involvement with policies and research for Down syndrome. Both those who have Down syndrome and their families can feel the positive impact that NDSS has had on the world.
So many amazing standout moments have happened because of the National Down Syndrome Society. Each year in September, during Down syndrome awareness month, a video presentation is played in Times Square. This draws attention to Down syndrome, educating those who do not know much about it; as well as, creates representation for those with disabilities. The National Down Syndrome Society had a large hand in the creation and implementation of the ABLE act which expands laws, making them more inclusive for those with Down syndrome. There have been many, “ongoing partnerships with major companies and organizations to promote inclusion in workplaces, media, and communities nationwide. NDSS worked with Mattel to create the first Barbie doll with Down syndrome and there are now two Barbie dolls with Down syndrome” [1]. All of these events mean a great deal to individuals with Down syndrome by creating inclusivity and spreading awareness of disabilities.
There are many ways that people can become involved with NDSS and aid in the change themselves. Participating in events is a great way for people to contribute to the mission of the National Down Syndrome Society. One could join the advocacy network or volunteer to help fundraise for the organization. Another option is to, “donate to support our work ensuring individuals with Down syndrome thrive across all aspects of life” [1]. The National Down Syndrome Society fights to ensure that all individuals with Down syndrome are able to live the best life possible. By advocating for disability rights for individuals with Down syndrome and creating moments of inclusivity, NDSS makes a difference for those with Down syndrome.
