What is Technology First?
Technology First is a statewide system that considers the use of technology before other options as it pertains to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, including but not limited to the following: autonomy, inclusion, etc.
Why does it matter?
Technology First legislation and implementation further supports autonomy, education/learning, leisure activities, and more. Examples of technology supporting autonomy include mobility devices and environmental design, AI/advanced technology in the home, smart devices, etc. Examples of technology supporting education/learning is learning software, IEP software, low tech devices that help individual mobility in the classroom, and more. Examples of technology supporting leisure activities include environmental design, adaptive sports and gaming equipment, and more. Technology First can also help overcome the nearly $1 Billion that it costs the United States annually for having such a high turnover in the Direct Support Professional position [1].
How many states are Technology First?
There are approximately 40 states that have Technology First legislation, initiatives, or other noted activities [2].
Moving Forward
Technology First has been, at the very least, a discussion in almost every state. In order to further support individuals with developmental disabilities, amid both staffing shortages and technological advances, we need every state to have Technology First recognition, as this will lead to the best possible outcomes for individuals with developmental disabilities, as well as our economy on a broadened scale.
