Assistive Technology Overview

Assistive technology (AT) encompasses various tools, equipment, and software that enhance the functionality of individuals with disabilities. Examples include wheelchairs, speech-to-text software, and handheld devices. AT is crucial for daily tasks, education, mobility, communication, and recreation. It improves access to learning, facilitates communication, and enables participation in public activities. Special education benefits from AT through software enhancing learning experiences and aiding in tracking Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 Plans. 3DA aims to increase accessibility to AT information, advocating for its advancement and dissemination of research. Individuals can contribute by recognizing AT needs, advocating for accessibility in public spaces, and engaging with organizations like 3DA for information and advocacy.
